What to expect from your next eye exam
With the advent of new technologies, you should certainly expect nothing less than a comprehensive eye health and vision exam from your primary eyecare provider. Many of our patients are surprised at the in-depth exams they receive at our office. From the initial pre-testing with the latest advanced instrumentation of the Retinal Optomap®, the Automated Refraction and Keratometry, the Humphrey Perimetry, and the Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar evaluations, to the complete vision and eye health assessments, we offer you one of the most extensive exams you will experience. Unlike many practices, our doctors perform most (if not all) of the tests, themselves. The following list outlines what evaluations you can expect when you arrive at our office.
- Complete medical and eye history interview
- Review of your lifestyle-oriented eyewear questionnaire (please complete at least 2-3 days before your exam)
- Pre-testing evaluation utilizing the latest computerized technology
- Blood pressure and blood sugar screenings (not covered by most vision insurance plans)
- Optomap® retinal exam (small added fee for this vital retinal eye health exam)
- Humphrey automated perimetry test using Frequency Doubling Technology (also with a small added fee)
- Entrance exams involving visual acuities, eye muscle coordination and depth perception evaluations, and many more
- Determination of spectacle and contact lens prescriptions (if contacts are an option)
- Computer Vision Syndrome detection and treatment
- Eye disease detection (both anterior and posterior segments of the eyes) including a dilated pupil exam
- Pediatric and adult learning-related vision problems detection and treatment with our Behavioral Optometrist, Dr. David Dalesio

Annual eye exams help protect you and your eyes with early detection of eye diseases
Most patients are unaware of the potential for blinding eye diseases until it’s too late. From Glaucoma to Macular Degeneration, many patients don't realize that early diagnosis and treatment may save their precious vision for the rest of their lives. They often think their symptoms are related to a change in their eyeglass prescription. There's no way to know for sure what may be wrong with your eyes until you have a full eye exam.
Another important factor to be aware of when considering annual eye exams is the fact that many systemic diseases can be detected through an eye exam. Many vascular disorders, like diabetes and high blood pressure, can be detected as well as tumors, thyroid disease, sarcoidosis, gastrointestinal disorders, cancer, and many others.
It is also important to note that many systemic medications may cause ocular side effects that should be monitored by your eyecare professional. Dry eyes is one of the most common problems seen in patients taking high blood pressure medications, birth control or hormone replacement therapy, antidepressants, and many others. Another medication that may cause more serious eye conditions is steroids which may come in the form of a pill, eyedrop, or nasal spray. If steroids are used for a prolonged period of time, the serious side effects may include Cataracts or Glaucoma.
