There are many lens manufacturers who make progressives using old technology (dating back to the 1970’s and 1980’s), leading to a tremendous amount of distortion and blurring of vision for patients using these products. There has been a tremendous amount of improvements made in the past 2-3 years in the area of manufacturing progressive lenses. These improvements include a reduction in peripheral distortion and enlargement of the reading and intermediate segments of the lenses. Breakthroughs in computer glasses have also occurred. There are several types of specialty lenses made to be worn specifically for patients who work on a computer at work or home for several hours per day. These lenses drastically reduce the eyestrain felt by many computer users.
Other important lens add-ons that help protect the lenses (scratch-resistance), the patients’ eyes (ultraviolet protection), and improve the patients’ vision and comfort (anti-reflective lenses to cut down glare improving overall vision, especially on computers and at night) may not be offered by other optical establishments when prices are quoted.

These type of fits, along with bifocal contact lens fits, tend to be challenging but they are always rewarding when these patients leave with a big smile on their faces.
